The community is invited to attend Miami Dade College/Kendall Campus’ Art of the Dance Spring Dance Concert, Friday, April 24 & Sunday, April 26, 2009. The performance will take place at Miami Dade College/Kendall Campus, McCarthy Theater (room 6120) at 7:30pm, 11011 SW 104 Street. Enjoy an evening of Dance showcasing Miami’s most esteemed and prestigious young dance artist of MDC/Kendall Campus, Jubilation Dance Ensemble, as they weave in and out of time with exuberance and exceptional artistic skill. The Art of the Dance is a celebration of the unique cultural experience that preserves and enriches the diversity of South Florida.
MDC’S Jubilation Dance Ensemble will honor Bridget Baker, owner of 6th Street Dance Studio with the prestigious Star Award. The Star Award is given to individuals and organization who exhibit outstanding artistic merit in Miami Dade County.
Afua Hall, Michelle Grant-Murray and Brittany Williams will present choreography that is distinctive, detailed and dynamic. The diversity and range of emotions explored reaches the center core of humanity. The dancers have extended the choreographers perceptions and thoughts with great detail, synthesized with a poignant and kinesthetic charge.
Michelle Grant-Murray will present Epiphany, an original work which premiered at the American College Dance Festival/Southeastern Conference in 2009. Epiphany, features elements of contemporary modern dance styles and elements of African Diaspora dance movement. The choreography with its raw and fluid gestures, examines the dichotic movement of change and enlightenment.
Afua Hall, former Philadanco performer, is the featured Artist-In-Resident. Ms. Hall will delight and intrigue audiences with her provocative, riveting and organic choreographic style. The work, Tough Love, fuses comedy, theatre, and contemporary traditions of modern dance to examine the unspoken rules of gender specification. Ms. Hall will also perform Afreeka, a celebration of a dancehall queen, her bold in your face attitude and her feminine qualities.
Brittany Williams, an emerging dance artist, will premiere We Did Not Hang Ourselves. Miss Williams scrutinizes the politics and emotions of manipulative relationships. The artistry and riveting choreographic style is unrefined, authentic and innovative. Miss Williams captures the essence of confinement, freedom and sovereignty.
